Research Proposal
Subject: Expansion of the British Empire
Subtopics: Western Africa(the expansion into the Gold Coast), Egypt(the takeover of the Suez and the creation of the Suez canal to lead to India), Pacific Islands(the spread into New Zealand, Borneo, and all of Australia), and Southern Africa.
Research Questions: Where did the British Empire expand to during the Victorian era? What were the reasons for this expansion? What effect did this have on the future of those territories?
Relevance: European colonialism was very important and has shaped how our world is today. Great Britain was the country that expanded the furthest and had the most land under its control. It would be important to look at what their reasoning was behind the worldwide expansion, and how this has affected the world today. Their expansion was very impressive considering the size of the actual country at the time.
Research/Plan: It will be helpful to determine first some of the exact dates and years that the British took over the regions mentioned above. Looking at some Encyclopedias would be useful, and if that doesn’t work, then I would use some articles on the library databases, such as JSTOR. I also looked up some books in the library and it looks like there is a large selection that I can use to help aid in my research. A helpful illustration would be a global map that shows how much land the empire controlled during this period, which was surprisingly vast.
Questions/Concerns: One of the main concerns I have is selecting from all of the colonies the ones that best show how British Colonialism has shaped our world today.

Research Questions: Where did the British Empire expand to during the Victorian era? What were the reasons for this expansion? What effect did this have on the future of those territories?
Relevance: I think that European colonialism was very important and has shaped how our world is today. Great Britain was the country that expanded the furthest and had the most land under its control. I think it would be important to look at what their reasoning was behind the worldwide expansion, and how this has affected the world today. Their expansion was very impressive considering the size of the actual country at the time.

I also looked up some books in the library and it looks like there is a large selection that I can use to help aid in my research. An illustration that I can use would be a map showing all the locations of British expansion during the Victorian era. This would help show the reader how much land the empire controlled during this time period, which is surprisingly larger than expected.
Questions/Concerns: One of the main concerns I have is picking only a few of these colonies, and selecting the ones that provide the best research. Since there are so many regions I could cover, I need to make sure I narrow down the list. Hopefully, a few of these regions have a great deal of resources to use in my paper.
